Chicks on Sticks

Founded in 1998 by Amy Ballestad and Shelley Chinander, Chicks on Sticks explores the ancient and universal art of stiltwalking. We also explore the powerful dynamic of working together as an all-female collective.

Through an initial grant from FORECAST Public ArtWorks, we were able to build stilts, make long-legged costumes, and create several small community performances. In the years since, we have collaborated with puppeteers, dancers, singers, aerialists, and pyrotechnicians to create original performances.

Our pieces range from tall-tale puppet shows in school gyms to flaming pyrotechnic pageants in urban corridors. Our artists also teach stiltwalking in workshops and summer youth camps.

Faribault Boksprings Rugby Team

For anyone reasonably familiar with American football, rugby should be an easy game to understand. The purpose of the game os rugby is to carry the ball over a goal line or kick it over a goal post with more consistency than one’s opposition. The laws of ruby are few and simple. Rugby action does not stop until someone scores, the ball goes out of bounds or a rule is broken.

The Boksprings are the longest tenured non-combined rugby club in Minnesota, Since their establishment in 1971 as a summer side by Mike Markman, the club has since withstood the test of time by continuing in their operation for thirty-one years.

Johneyo, Twin Cities

Johneyo John started yo-yoing when he was 4 1/2 and saw a kid doing really cool 1 and 2 handed tricks on the "Bill Cosby" show. That did it - he wanted to learn how to yo yo after that. It took his Mom a few days but she finally found a local yo yo club from the internet. His parents brought him there every Friday for the next 5 years until it dissolved. John is now 12 yrs old and mainly a Single A player, but he also does Off string, 2 hand, and some Counter-weight. My favorite yo-yo's are the The Black Knight(of course), the Hitman, Dark Magic, Aquarius, and the Special Agent. John also collects yo-yos and currently has over 500 and counting in his collection. The oldest one is an original wood Filipino Goody and his rarest is one of Johnnie DelValle's X-Con prototypes that he got at Worlds. He is sponsored by Yo-yo Jam and on their National Yo-yo Jam Team. John believes they're one of the top yoyo manufactures in the world. He goes to most of the yo-yo contests that are in the area and also to the Worlds contest in Orlando and Nationals in Chico, CA. Check out his contest and records page on his website to see how he’s been doing.

John does solo public and private yo-yo performances for schools, Pack meetings, birthday parties and music fests. He has performed at the Boundary Water's Blues Fest in Ely, Mn the last couple of years. Check out the video clip page and you'll see a clip of him performing there. Schools have been everything from a full assembly of apx. 600 students to individual classrooms.

He also is a tournament chess player and goes to tournaments about every other week during the school year. He started playing when he was 4 year old at Montessori school. In the local SCA he currently has over 300 merit points, which is basically 1 point for every game won and 24 chess trophies from all the tournaments he’s played in. His USCF rating is currently at 1174.

Music is another one of his hobbies. He’s played the guitar for the last 2 years and has both a classical and a Fender electric. He’s played the drums for the last few years on a drum set, which was compliments of Tony Danza.
