Learn to Play Rugby

rugby teamBokspring RugbyFor anyone reasonably familiar with American football, rugby should be an easy game to understand.  The purpose of the game of rugby is to carry the ball over a goal line or kick it over a goal post with more consistency than one’s opposition.  The laws of ruby are few and simple.  Rugby action does not stop until someone scores, the ball goes out of bounds or a rule is broken.

The Boksprings are the longest tenured non-combined rugby club in Minnesota, Since their establishment in 1971 as a summer side by Mike Markman, the club has since withstood the test of time by continuing in their operation for thirty-nine years.

Shelby Bucher – English Hunt Seat Riding Demonstration

Shleby BucherShelby is a local high school sophomore with a love of horses and English style riding.  At CulturFest, Shelby will demonstrate jumping and English style riding etiquette.

Additionally, Shelby will host a booth in the passport area explaining the history and skills involved in English style riding.

Owatonna LaCrosse Association

rugby teamBokspring RugbyLacrosse is a team sport of Native American origin played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled stick called a crosse or lacrosse stick, mainly played on the East Coast of the United States and Canada. The head of the lacrosse stick is strung with loose mesh designed to catch and hold the lacrosse ball. Offensively, the objective of the game is to score by shooting the ball into an opponent's goal, using the lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball to do so. Defensively, the objective is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body contact or positioning.

The sport has four major types: men's field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse. Lacrosse (in particular box lacrosse) is the national summer sport of Canada.

Watch the Owatonna Girls Team demonstrate how the sport is played.
